The excavation was led by renowned archaeologist Howard Carter and funded by George Herbert (the 5th Earl of Carnarvon), great-grandfather of the current 8th Earl of Carnarvon, George Herbert. In other words, Highclere Castle is inextricably related to the finding of Tutankhamun.
